Try as we might with tutorials and at-home kits, there are some things that are just better left to the experts. With roots growing out seemingly by the hour, nails left unpainted, and stressed-out complexions, we've been growing an even deeper appreciation for the beauty treatments that help keep us looking and feeling our best. The moment we’re allowed to be within six feet of another person you’re bound to see these editors at their go-to spots.
Highlights with George Papanikolas at Rita Hazan Salon
I usually refresh my highlights every few months or so depending on when George is in town (he’s based in Los Angeles). For now, I’m letting my highlights be. I’m just trying to do my best with washing less to preserve the color and treating with a good-quality color-protective shampoo, treatment mask, and leave-in conditioner. I know better than to try to touch them up myself since George’s work is truly art. I feel fresh and vibrant, like a new person, after I get them done. And I love catching up with George and all of his jet-setting adventures!
It has also been over two months since my last pedicure, which I would try to get every two to three weeks at Tenoverten at the Parker New York. I’ve been DIY-ing my pedicures, but they can’t really compare to professional results! For some reason I always need to have a pedicure. Having my toes painted, even if no one sees them, makes me feel polished (pun intended). And the experience is a nice relaxing escape that I usually get to share with a coworker or friend (or coworker who is a friend!). Haircut with Dhiran Mistry at David Mallett New York
I typically go see Dhiran once every three months to maintain my bob. I last went in February and am now in the dreaded ‘in-between’ phase. Now, I’ve been trying to have fun with my awkward hair length by playing with pigtails and not sweating the small stuff. But I really miss having wash-and-go hair that is unfussy whether I style it or not for the month or so after I get it cut. That’s the best part about Dhiran’s haircuts—they allow me to put minimal effort into my hair on a day-to-day basis and still feel fabulous. Aside from the fact that I feel most myself with a cropped, blunt bob, I miss the ritual of feeling like I am maintaining myself in such a distinct way. Botox and Fillers with Dr. Dendy Engelman
My Botox has totally dissolved and it’s leading to intense tension headaches. Not ideal during this high-stress time. For now, I am face-rolling with my Joanna Czech roller and using my Nuface toning device to stimulate my muscles, as well as slathering my forehead in CBD to ease the tension. I get Botox and lip fillers a few times a year with Dr. Dendy and I wouldn’t go to anyone else. I love seeing her because she’s a ray of sunshine. I love catching up with her and learning what’s new in cosmetic dermatology. She’s a master at giving perfectly natural results. Lip fillers give balance to my face and make me feel happier overall, while Botox has been proven to be a mood-boosting treatment. When you can’t frown, you feel sad less often. Annual Skin Exam with Dr. Anne Chapas at Union Square Dermatology
I’ve been seeing Dr. Chapas for a while—she’s helped me wrangle my cystic acne and she’s one of the only people I’d trust to put a laser on my face. I faithfully schedule my skin check annually—it’s important to me because skin cancer runs in my family. A skin check is not the most glamourous beauty moment, but it’s really the most important one. In the meantime I’ve been wearing sunscreen, staying out of the sun when possible, and patiently waiting to reschedule! It’s a security blanket! It settles my nerves to know that weirdo mole on my arm is actually okay. Cut, Color, and Style with Erickson Arrunategui and Amelia Trammel at Bumble and bumble Salon
I typically go for a full reset every three months, so in quarantine I’ve been slathering on Matrix’s green mask to neutralize the red tones cropping up in my inky strands, but my light brown roots are starting to win the battle. Because my hair is stick straight, I’m terrified to attempt a quaran-trim, so I’m now committing to waist-length split ends by default. Personal appearance is often the first thing to fall by the wayside when life isn’t going according to plan, so there’s something poignant about hair professionals genuinely wanting to take care of you and make sure you leave feeling better than you did when you arrived. Amelia always nails the espresso shade with silvery undertones I’m seeking and Erickson’s intuitive cuts make styling my hair at home effortless. Manicure at Sundays at The Shops at Hudson Yards
The last time I visited was the last weekend before the city basically shut down. I've just been keeping my nails short and clean. I bought myself a nice soft nail brush to keep my nails extra tidy. I love popping over to Sundays because it's super close to my apartment, and it's in the new Hudson Yards development. I love to support new neighborhood businesses, and of course, the people who work for them. The women at Sundays are really sweet, and the environment is super-serene, so it feels more like a spa treatment than a dash-in, dash-out sort of place. I love that the service isn't harried, that they give you a nice cup of tea during your mani, put your bag in a basket (never on the floor), and let you dry your nails on the couch (not on an uncomfortable bench). Relaxer Touch-Up from Reece Brown-Willis and Alanna Reid at A Curl Can Dream
I haven’t been to the salon since January, but I usually would go every three or four months for a touch-up. I’ve been dealing with two different textures which isn’t easy, but I’m teaching myself how to braid! Air-dried styles like twist-outs have become my go-to as well. But I miss the feeling of running my fingers through a fresh blowout. When my hair looks its bounciest and most shiny, it definitely puts a little spring in my step. I miss touching my face. I miss other people touching my face—in a professional capacity. I think once we’re allowed to leave our houses again, I will really need someone to help manually lift my face up.
