Margot Robbie may be one of the most illustrious actors in Hollywood today, but she mostly keeps her personal life out of the limelight—especially as it pertains to her relationship with husband Tom Ackerley.
The two quietly got married in 2016 and have since welcomed their first child together. Through the years, Ackerley has been a supportive presence in Robbie’s life and career, especially as her star power rose in sync with Barbie mania. But Ackerley is his own force to reckon with in the film industry.
Below, we break down everything to know about the Hollywood producer.
He is from the United Kingdom.
Ackerley was born in Surrey, near London, and grew up in Guildford, where he attended Godalming College, according to SurreyLive.
He is a producer.
Ackerley’s IMDb page is full of producing credits for major hits, from the Golden Globe–nominated Netflix miniseries Maid to the 2020 Oscar-winning film Promising Young Woman. He often coproduces projects with Robbie, including films she has starred in, like Barbie and I, Tonya.
In addition to producing, Ackerley has served as an assistant director on movies like The Brothers Grimsby, Yussef Is Complicated, and Everly.
Margot and Tom co-founded a production company together.
The couple established LuckyChap Entertainment in 2014 with Josey McNamara and Robbie’s childhood friend Sophia Kerr. The company says it aims to fill a gap in the film industry by supporting female-centered stories and storytellers. In addition to producing award-winning films like I, Tonya, Promising Young Woman, and Barbie, LuckyChap has also developed Saltburn, Dreamland, Birds of Prey, and, most recently, Wuthering Heights.
“If we can be a company that curates new and emerging talent, and can bring them through and provide that platform to do bigger movies and studio movies, that’s ideally what we want to do,” Ackerley said in a 2020 interview with MovieMaker.
He started his career working on the Harry Potter films.
Ackerley got his start by working as an extra on the first three Harry Potter movies.
Robbie, a self-avowed Potterhead, talked about her husband’s stint in the iconic fantasy series in a 2020 interview on The Graham Norton Show.
“My husband is in the Harry Potter movies. I know, I was like, ‘Had you told me sooner we would’ve been married very quickly,’ ” she joked. “But he was an extra when he was a little kid—he was one of the Slytherin extras when Draco pushes some kids out of the way to see Buckbeak in the third book. He pushes my husband out of the way.”
Margot and Tom had a friends-to-lovers romance.
Robbie gave a rare glimpse into the start of their relationship in a 2016 interview.
“The idea of relationships made me want to vomit,” she said. “And then this crept up on me. We were friends for so long. I was always in love with him, but I thought, ‘Oh, he would never love me back. Don’t make it weird, Margot. Don’t be stupid and tell him that you like him.’ And then it happened, and I was like, ‘Of course we’re together. This makes so much sense, the way nothing has ever made sense before.’ ”
The couple welcomed their first baby in 2024.
Ackerley and Robbie welcomed their first child together, a baby boy, in October 2024. People reported the news in early November, with a source later telling the outlet, “They waited a long time to get pregnant, so it was almost unbelievable when the baby actually arrived. They’ve both been settling into being parents. They’re homebodies, so it’s been lovely to spend the time just them, at home with him. They’re so happy.”
The name of their son has not been publicly shared.
He’s a “phenomenal” cook, according to Margot.
During a February 2026 appearance on the Table Manners podcast with Jessie and Lennie Ware to promote her new film, Wuthering Heights, Robbie shared some rare insights about Ackerley, who also serves as a producer on the movie.
“My husband is a phenomenal cook,” Robbie gushed. “He could be a chef, he is so good. We are like a perfect match. I love to eat. I didn’t know he was good until after we got married.”
As for some of his best dishes? Robbie said, “He spends two days making a spaghetti bolognese. He does a three-day fried rice with Korean short ribs. He does steak better than any restaurant I’ve ever been to!”
