From celebrity-couple PDA to record-breaking wins and powerful speeches
The 97th Academy Awards took place in Hollywood tonight, giving us jaw-dropping red-carpet looks from our favorite stars, like Selena Gomez, Lily-Rose Depp, Zoe Saldaña, Penélope Cruz, Demi Moore, and Kylie Jenner (who attended the ceremony with Timothée Chalamet).
The ceremony itself also brought several memorable moments, including PDA from our favorite Hollywood It couples, impassioned speeches, and records being broken. Scroll ahead to see all the highlights you may have missed from the 2025 awards show.
The “No Other Land” speech was powerful
As the team members behind No Other Land accepted their Best Documentary award, they delivered an incredibly powerful speech pleading for peace. “We call on the world to stop the injustice and stop the ethnic cleansing of the Palestinian people,” journalist Basel Adra said, to applause from the audience.
Yuval Abraham, meanwhile, called for an end to “ethnic supremacy.”
The film documents Palestinian life under occupation in the West Bank by the state of Israel.
Abraham emphasized that while he can move freely, Basel and “millions of Palestinians” will remain “locked in the occupied West Bank,” and he described the two-tier justice system as an “apartheid.”
“This situation of apartheid between us, this inequality, it has to end,” Abraham added.
Harry met Sally, again
Meg Ryan and Billy Cristal had a When Harry Met Sally reunion on the Oscars stage, when they appeared as presenters for the final award of the night, Best Picture. Crystal noted that he first hosted the award show 35 years ago this month.
He then appropriated an iconic line from the cult-classic film: “I came here tonight because when you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible.”
This time, he said: “Because when you have a chance to be an Oscar winner for the rest of your life, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible.”
Zoe Saldaña dedicated her award to her grandma
The actor took the stage to accept her award for Actress in a Supporting Role for her performance in Emilia Pérez. In her speech, Saldaña dedicated her award to her grandmother. “I am a proud daughter of immigrant parents,” she said, adding, “I’m the first American of Dominican origin to accept an Academy Award.”
Andrew Garfield honored his mom
While presenting Best Animated Feature and Best Animated Short alongside Goldie Hawn, Garfield honored his late mother, Lynne, who died in 2019.
“There’s a person that gave my mother during her life the most joy, the most comfort, and tonight I feel very lucky because I get to thank that person from the bottom of my heart,” Garfield said. “That person is Goldie Hawn.”
Paul Tazewell makes history
Tazewell took home the Costume Design award for his creations in Wicked, becoming the first Black man to win the honor. He got a standing ovation from the film’s cast, including Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo.
Kylie and Timothée showed PDA
Jenner and Chalamet could not stop giggling and kissing during the Oscars ceremony, continuing their awards-season streak.
Adam Sandler did a bit
The comedic actor came into the ceremony in an Adam Sandler–coded outfit: a sky-blue hoodie and bright blue shorts. Influenced by Nikki Glaser’s Golden Globes speech nod, he called out Timothée Chalamet in his signature silly voice: “Chalameeeet!”
